Nigeria as emerging global model for credible reforms — World Bank

By Kunle Sanni –
The World Bank has described Nigeria as an increasingly cited global example of steady and credible reform leadership, citing the country’s consistency in implementing economic reforms despite initial challenges.
The World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, made the remark on Tuesday during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja.
Bjerde, who was accompanied by other senior World Bank officials, commended the Nigerian government for maintaining reform momentum over the past two years, noting that the clarity of direction and visible results have helped rebuild confidence among investors, policymakers and the private sector.

According to her, Nigeria’s forthcoming Country Partnership Framework is closely aligned with the country’s own development priorities, including the ambition to achieve a $1 trillion economy and sustain 7 per cent economic growth.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the ongoing reforms, acknowledging that while the process has been difficult, the government remains resolute.
“There will be no turning back,” the President said.
He explained that although the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates initially contributed to inflationary pressures, inflation has since eased and the naira has stabilised, improving investor confidence and the overall business environment.
Tinubu said the reforms are anchored on transparency, accountability and policy stability, adding that agriculture remains a key priority of his administration.
