Nigeria at 66: Adebayo to lead SDP’s Independence Day drive

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is set to take its Independence Day mobilisation to the grassroots, with rallies planned across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The mobilisation, tagged “Join the Party This Independence Day,” is expected to bring together SDP presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, party leaders, supporters and prospective members across the country.

Nigeria will mark its 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026, with the Federal Government planning a low-key celebration featuring an Independence Day public lecture and a presidential broadcast.

For the SDP, however, the anniversary provides an opportunity to combine the national celebration with grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party urged Nigerians to participate in the rallies and join what they describe as a movement for a “New Nigeria,” with poverty and insecurity identified as key issues.

Interested Nigerians are also being directed to register through the Fix Naija Movement platform, a grassroots mobilisation initiative associated with Adebayo and the SDP’s 2027 campaign.

The SDP’s mobilisation is expected to provide the party with an opportunity to engage supporters, attract new members and promote its political message at the grassroots as the 2027 electoral contest gathers momentum.
