Nigeria at 66: Baptist congregants pray for economic restoration, security

By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin

The pastor of First Baptist Church, Surulere, Ilorin, Rev. Dr. Yinka Ololade, has led congregants in prayers for economic restoration, security and divine wisdom for President Bola Tinubu, state governors and other leaders across the country.

The prayers were offered during two special National Day services held to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, shortly after Ololade’s sermon titled “Nigeria @66,” with 2 Chronicles 7:14 as the golden text.

Ololade urged the congregation to pray for economic recovery, peace across the country, wisdom for political leaders and peaceful elections in the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for divine intervention in the affairs of the nation.

He said Nigeria was suffering from banditry, violence, injustice, division and poverty, leading the congregants in prayers for healing and restoration. He also prayed for peace at the local government, state and national levels, as well as the safe rescue of abducted corps members reportedly kidnapped in Imo State while travelling to an NYSC orientation camp.

The cleric also called for youthful leadership anchored on integrity and character, citing the biblical Daniel as an example of a young person who stood for justice and righteousness. He urged Nigerians to make righteousness a priority rather than focusing solely on changes in political leadership during election periods.

Ololade further encouraged members to be content in all circumstances and invest in the education and skills development of their children to prepare them for independent and productive lives. He also criticised pastors who pressure members to give offerings beyond their means, warning that such practices could push some people into ungodly activities.

He urged Nigerians to become “the light of God” by allowing their character and conduct to reflect righteousness, encouraging the congregation to serve as positive examples for others. According to him, individual transformation is essential to achieving meaningful change in the country.

The service also featured a pastors’ appreciation and thanksgiving session, while a movie produced by the church’s drama unit, titled “Clean Slate,” was scheduled to be screened later in the evening.
