Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called on Nigerians to remain united and honour the sacrifices of the country’s founding heroes as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Makinde made the call on Thursday during the Independence Day celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where he was represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal.

Speaking on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” Makinde said Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of its founding fathers.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, the governor said the freedom enjoyed by Nigerians should inspire citizens to remain responsible and committed to nation-building.

Makinde said the anniversary also provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the challenges confronting the country and Oyo State, while stressing the importance of democracy, the rule of law and responsible citizenship.

He urged Nigerians to see the country’s more than 250 ethnic groups as a source of strength rather than division, calling for peaceful coexistence irrespective of ethnic or religious differences.

The governor also highlighted his administration’s achievements since 2019, including interventions in education, security, infrastructure, health and sports, as well as the establishment of the Amotekun Corps and projects across Oke-Ogun I and II, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Ibarapa and Ibadan.

Makinde congratulated Nigerians and Oyo residents on the anniversary and urged them to continue promoting peace and unity, while the celebration featured a march past, cultural displays and presentation of prizes, with government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries in attendance.
