Osun APC calls for emergency support for flood victims

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the state government and other stakeholders to provide urgent assistance to victims of recent flooding in Osogbo and other towns across the state.
The party, which sympathised with the victims, said the flooding had caused hardship, disrupted livelihoods and displaced residents, leaving some families struggling to meet their basic needs.
In a statement signed by its director of media and information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC identified Jagun Uniosun Community, Iya Dudu Community, Osunlepo, Koledowo, Olude Aranhin, Kunike, Baruwa, Gbodofon and Oke-Osun among the affected areas in Osogbo.
Olabisi urged the state and Federal Governments, public-spirited individuals, churches, mosques and civil society organisations to provide relief to affected residents. He also called on the Osun State Ministry of Environment to develop effective measures to prevent future flooding and urged the state government to provide temporary assistance to displaced families.
The party appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to direct attention to the state and take steps to reduce the impact of the flooding on affected communities.
Beyond immediate relief, the APC urged town planners to enforce building regulations and prevent structures from being erected on waterways. It also called on the state government to educate residents on the dangers of building on waterways and indiscriminate waste disposal, which can block drains and worsen flooding.
“Our sympathy and prayers go to the people of the state who have been devastated by the latest flooding disaster across various communities in Osogbo and other towns in the state,” Olabisi said.
He added that the party shared in the grief caused by the continuous rainfall and assured victims that “they are not alone in this experience that they were made to go through by the reason of the natural disaster”.
