Nigeria condemns attempted coup in Benin, pledges solidarity with neighbour
Nigeria has condemned the attempted forcible seizure of power in the Republic of Benin, describing the incident as a grave assault on democracy and the constitutional order of its West African neighbour.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the federal government affirmed that it “unequivocally condemns in the strongest possible terms” the failed attempt to overthrow the Beninese government in the early hours of the same day.
The statement declared that the act was a clear attempt at destabilisation and an affront to the collective will of the Beninese people, who it noted had consistently demonstrated their commitment to peaceful political transitions.
Nigeria expressed firm solidarity with the government and people of Benin, commending the swift response of Beninese authorities in safeguarding democratic institutions and maintaining order.
It also praised the “courage and professionalism” of the country’s security forces for repelling the attempt and ensuring the safety of the president.
Reiterating its commitment to democracy, good governance and the rule of law as essential foundations for peace and development, Nigeria warned that any unconstitutional change of government posed a threat to regional stability and the socio-economic gains achieved across West Africa.
As a key member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU), Nigeria called on member states and the international community to jointly condemn the incident and uphold the AU Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, as well as the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
The statement further urged all actors in Benin to remain calm, respect the rule of law and resolve political issues through peaceful and constitutional means.
