The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Sam Nujoma, the founding President of Namibia and a key figure in Africa’s liberation struggle.
In a statement issued by the acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria extended condolences to the government and people of Namibia, the Nujoma family, and the entire Southern African region.
Dr. Nujoma, who led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 and served as its first president for 15 years, reportedly passed away peacefully on Saturday night in Windhoek, the nation’s capital. He was widely recognized as a visionary leader, a Pan-Africanist, and a relentless freedom fighter dedicated to Namibia’s emancipation from colonial rule.
“As the pioneer President, Dr. Nujoma laid the foundation for a nation built on democracy, reconciliation, and development.
“His leadership set Namibia on a path of peace and progress, earning him international respect and admiration,” the statement read.
Nigeria also recalled Dr. Nujoma’s strong ties with the country, describing him as a “true friend of Nigeria and a steadfast ally in African solidarity and cooperation.”
The Nigerian government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Namibia and pledged continued support for African unity.
