Nigeria recorded four million more births than EU in 2025 — Elon Musk
Chief Executive Officer of Tesla and tech billionaire, Elon Musk, has claimed that Nigeria recorded about four million more births than the entire European Union in 2025, citing figures generated by his artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.
In a post on his X account on Saturday, Musk wrote: “Nigeria alone had four million more births than the entire EU last year”.
According to data referenced by Grok, Nigeria recorded an estimated 7.8 million births in 2025, compared with about 3.5 million births across the European Union.
The figures highlight Nigeria’s high birth rate, which continues to outpace many regions globally despite growing economic challenges.
Earlier this year, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) disclosed that about 14 million Nigerian children had their births officially registered over the previous two years, marking significant progress in birth registration and legal identity coverage.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, continues to experience rapid population growth. However, the World Bank estimated that about 63 per cent of Nigerians were living below the poverty line in 2025 amid rising inflation and the high cost of living.
Meanwhile, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently said at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit that, for the first time, the country’s economy was growing faster than its estimated population of about 250 million people.
