Nigeria targets 15th Africa scrabble title record in Liberia

President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Bright Idahosa, has expressed confidence that Nigeria will extend its record of Africa Scrabble Championship titles to 15 at the 16th edition of the competition, scheduled to hold in Monrovia, Liberia, from October 22 to 25.

About 24 countries are expected to converge on the Liberian capital for the biennial championship at the Sir Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex, where players will compete for the individual title and the Best-Playing Country award.

Nigeria, the defending champion in both categories, will be seeking to maintain its dominance after Oluwatimilehin Doko emerged as the highest-ranked player to win the individual title at the previous edition held in Kigali, Rwanda, two years ago.

The country has established itself as the continent’s dominant force in scrabble, winning 14 of the 15 editions of the championship and losing the title only once to South Africa.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Idahosa expressed confidence that the Nigerian contingent would sustain the country’s dominance and reaffirm its position as Africa’s leading scrabble nation.
