Nigeria to concession airport toll gates, rolls out hybrid payment system

The Nigerian Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has announced plans to hand over the management of airport toll gates to private operators in order to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), citing traffic congestion caused by the earlier cashless-only system. He stressed the importance of a seamless payment system.
As part of the transition, a hybrid payment system allowing both cash and card transactions will be reintroduced from March 13, 2026.
Motorists holding existing FAAN Go Cashless Cards will still be able to use them, while other electronic payment options—including POS terminals and digital platforms—will continue to be available.
The concessioning of airport toll gates is expected to attract private sector expertise and investment, improving service delivery and boosting government revenue.
The ministry emphasized that the hybrid payment model is a temporary measure designed to ease the transition toward a fully automated system.
Keyamo assured stakeholders that the ministry is committed to achieving a modern, efficient, and user-friendly payment system at Nigerian airports, enhancing both passenger experience and operational efficiency.
