Nigeria Weightlifting Federation condoles Kano Govt over mishap

The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Kano State Government, athletes, officials, and journalists of Team Kano who were involved in a road accident that claimed the lives of over 20 persons on their way back from the Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival.

The NWF President, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Aladi, in a press statement he personally signed, described the auto accident as a national tragedy that cut short the lives of young athletes and officials whose services were still very much needed.

The Federation prayed for the eternal rest of the departed Team Kano athletes and officials and urged the Kano State Government to remain close to the bereaved families during this period of grief.

Dr. Abdul described the accident as tragic and emphasized that the sacrifices and dedication of the deceased athletes and officials must be recognized to set a good example for other sportsmen and women, who may be either encouraged or discouraged by the incident.

The NWF called on the Federal Government to repair Nigerian roads to prevent them from remaining death traps, especially for sportsmen and women who frequently travel in pursuit of glory for the country or their respective states.

Dr. Abdul Aladi also appealed to the Kano State Government to properly immortalize the deceased athletes, officials, and journalists, and to ensure that their families are adequately compensated, noting that many of the athletes could have been the breadwinners of their households.
