Nigeria’s diversity is strength, unity must remain greatest asset — Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on Nigerians to promote unity and mutual understanding, saying the country’s diversity remains a source of strength and an important asset for national development.

Idris made the call on Friday in Obudu, Cross River State, where he attended the wake-keep of the late Ukandi Placidus Ugar Ogar, alongside family members, friends and other dignitaries.

Among those at the ceremony were the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Peter Odey; former governor of the state, Ben Ayade; the Chief of Staff to the governor, Emmanuel Ironbar; and the Commissioner for Lands, Erasmus Ekpang.

The late Ogar, who died at the age of 76, was an elder brother to Ayade and Frank Ayade.

Speaking at the ceremony, Idris said the gathering demonstrated the ability of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds to come together in solidarity.

“What I have seen today is the diversity of Nigeria and how it can be further harnessed to promote unity in this country. Nigerians from all walks of life are Nigerians first. Therefore, we must celebrate them wherever they are,” he said.

The minister described the death of Ogar as a moment of sorrow, but said his life should also be celebrated for contributing to unity and bringing people together.

“It is a moment of sorrow that he has passed on, but also a moment of gratitude that he lived a worthy life, one that helped bring people together,” Idris said.
