Nigeria’s security agencies working tirelessly to protect citizens — Information minister

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that security agencies are working tirelessly to protect citizens and prevent further attacks across the country.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance on Friday in an interview with the BBC’s Victoria Uwonkunda, addressing recent security concerns including the attack in Maiduguri.

Idris dismissed claims that Nigeria’s security agencies had failed, saying, “I don’t think they failed. I think that more work needs to be done. Nigerian security agencies are working around the clock to ensure that this does not happen again.” He noted that Maiduguri has seen significant improvements in peace and stability over time.

He further highlighted the government’s reform agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stressing that it is aimed at strengthening security and safeguarding lives and property nationwide.

On international developments, particularly tensions in the Middle East, Idris emphasised Nigeria’s readiness to support global stability, particularly in the energy sector. “Nigeria is ever ready to contribute to energy security around the world. Whatever Nigeria can do to ease tension, it will do. The world needs oil, and Nigeria is there,” he said.

Discussing President Tinubu’s recent engagements abroad, Idris described the visit to the United Kingdom as a milestone for diplomatic, cultural, and economic relations between the two countries, adding that it reinforces Nigeria’s global standing.

He also highlighted the positive impact of the administration’s reforms, noting that they have improved Nigeria’s economic profile and contributed to the country being viewed favourably by international partners.

Idris concluded by reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to sustaining reforms, enhancing security, and positioning Nigeria as a responsible and reliable partner on the global stage.
