At least five people were injured on Monday when a Toyota Hiace bus crashed into two parked vehicles at Oba-Ile First Gate in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The bus, said to be travelling from Lagos, reportedly veered off the road at about 2:45pm before colliding with the two vehicles.
The accident involved an 18-passenger bus with registration number LAM 256 LG, Kogi, and two parked vehicles with number plates AKR 914 FT and DV 724 EKY.
Assessing the situation, Western Post gathered from eyewitnesses that the bus driver was attempting to avoid another vehicle which reportedly suddenly obstructed his path.
For instance, one of the eyewitnesses, who chose to speak on condition of anonymity, claimed that the other vehicle, identified as a Dyna truck, was being driven recklessly before its driver reportedly lost control.
The respondent added that the driver fled the scene after the crash while five passengers were subsequently taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment with others escaping with minor injuries.
One of the passengers, Austin Akoji, however, gave more details about the exact number of victims, saying there were about nine passengers in the bus when the incident occurred. Akoji said, “Five of the passengers were taken to the hospital, while some of us sustained only minor injuries.
From WP’s assessment, the three vehicles were badly damaged in the crash, while security personnel at the scene assisted with rescue efforts and arrangements to remove the wrecked vehicles. The exact cause of the accident had yet to be independently established as of press time.
