“No march 26 deadline”: INEC warns public against fake election notice

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed a viral social media graphic claiming that the commission had announced a deadline for government officials intending to contest elections to resign from office.

In a statement released on Friday via its official X handle, the electoral body described the information circulating online as false and not originating from the commission.

INEC said the graphic, which claims that March 26 had been fixed as the deadline for public office holders seeking elective positions to step down, was fabricated and misleading.

According to the commission, it has not made any such announcement regarding resignation deadlines for political aspirants who currently hold government positions.

“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to a graphic currently circulating online claiming that the Commission has announced March 26 as the deadline for government officials seeking election to resign,” the statement read.

It added “The Commission wishes to state clearly that the information is false and did not emanate from INEC.”

INEC further stressed that it had not issued any directive or notice fixing a resignation deadline as suggested in the viral message.

The commission therefore urged members of the public, media organisations and political stakeholders to disregard the graphic and rely only on information released through its official communication channels for accurate updates on the electoral process.
