‘No regrets working against Jonathan in 2015’ — Rotimi Amaechi

…says he and Fayemi birthed coalition idea
Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, says he has no regrets about playing a role in the removal of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, insisting it was a necessary move to “save Nigeria” at the time.
Speaking during an X space session titled Weekend Politics on Friday, Amaechi addressed speculations surrounding Jonathan’s possible return in the 2027 presidential race, arguing that the former leader has little to offer beyond serving a single term.
“I don’t regret removing GEJ. In fact, I should be praised for saving Nigeria then, just like I am trying to save Nigeria now. I heard he wants to run again. What does he bring to the table aside from having only four years to serve?” Amaechi said.

Although Jonathan has neither confirmed nor denied his interest in the presidency, Amaechi maintained that the ex-president’s return bid was certain — without offering evidence for his claim.
Turning to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Amaechi revealed that he and former Ekiti governor, Kayode Fayemi, birthed the idea of a stronger coalition before the decision to accommodate other politicians of like minds.
He also disclosed that he and others “begged and forced” former Senate President David Mark to accept the position of national chairman. The former governor, however, accused some party members of prioritising general election campaigns over primary contests, while allowing their supporters to insult rivals unchecked.
“For this ADC, it’s very difficult because some people are already campaigning for the general elections when they should be campaigning for primaries. Their supporters are insulting everyone and they aren’t calling them to order,” he said.
Amaechi also recalled a 2015 episode when he urged former Senate President Bukola Saraki to shelve his presidential ambition in the spirit of political sacrifice.
“How to overcome ego is personal sacrifice. In 2015, I went to Dr. Bukola Saraki and pleaded with him not to run for President because he wanted to run,” he said.
