No tear gas fired at pensioners – Lagos police

The Lagos State Police Command has debunked social media reports alleging that members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) were tear-gassed during their peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, August 31, 2026.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Command Spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi said no tear gas was fired during the protest, describing the allegation as false and misleading.

According to the statement, about 500 pensioners protested at the Lagos State Governor’s Office, Alausa, Ikeja, before meeting with the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Tayo Akinmade Ayinde. They later dispersed peacefully at about 4:30 p.m., with no incident recorded.

The Command also said a photograph circulating online, purportedly showing the retirees being tear-gassed, was AI-generated and did not reflect what happened.

It urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading misinformation.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting peaceful assembly while maintaining law and order.
