NOA DG commends Nigeria’s 26 years of democracy

…urges citizens’ active participation

As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, has lauded the country for sustaining democratic governance for 26 uninterrupted years.

Describing the milestone as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people, Onilu emphasized that democracy remains the best form of government and a pillar of national development.

“Our mandate as an agency enjoins us to promote democracy as the best form of government, and we are proud to say that Nigeria has made significant progress in this regard,” Onilu said.

He noted that the value of democracy is enshrined in the Nigerian Promise of the National Values Charter, stressing the government’s obligation to uphold, promote, and protect it as a cornerstone of the nation’s progress.

The NOA boss called on citizens to safeguard fundamental democratic principles, including freedom of expression, thought, and conscience, which he described as the bedrock of the country’s democracy.

Onilu further encouraged Nigerians to engage in informed decision-making and contribute their voices to national discourse as a way to foster a more inclusive and responsive democracy.

Reaffirming the Agency’s commitment to civic education and public enlightenment, the DG said NOA will continue working to promote democratic values, foster a culture of responsible citizenship, and equip Nigerians with the knowledge and skills required to participate meaningfully in governance.
