NOA, NEMA collaborate to curb fuel scooping tragedies

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has sought the collaboration of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in a nationwide campaign against fuel scooping from fallen tankers.
During a visit to NEMA headquarters on Wednesday, Issa-Onilu engaged with NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, to discuss joint efforts aimed at addressing the recurring menace, which has led to several tragedies across the country.

Highlighting the dangers associated with fuel scooping, Issa-Onilu referenced the recent explosion in Dikko, Niger State, where youths resisted security personnel while attempting to collect spilled fuel, resulting in a fatal incident.
He attributed the persistence of such occurrences to a deeper societal issue, emphasizing a decline in Nigeria’s value system and communal responsibility.
“Our value system has been eroded, and there is no duty of care towards fellow citizens as Nigerians were known to be before,” Issa-Onilu lamented.

In response, Mrs. Umar reaffirmed NEMA’s readiness to collaborate with NOA to curb the dangerous practice.
She pledged the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through intensified awareness campaigns and emergency response measures.
