NOC breaks ground on permanent secretariat in Abuja

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has launched the construction of its permanent secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, marking a significant milestone in bolstering Nigeria’s sports infrastructure.

The project, situated on a 5-hectare plot allocated by the Federal Government in the Aviation Village, was unveiled during a board meeting on June 11, 2025, attended by key figures, including the National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade.

Led by NOC President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, OON, alongside members of the Executive Committee and Board, the initiative aims to establish a state-of-the-art headquarters to streamline the NOC’s operations and enhance sports development nationwide.

The facility will house the NOC Secretariat and feature advanced training facilities for various sports federations, fostering an environment for athletic excellence ahead of major international events like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

The secretariat, to be developed in phases with a minimum of five floors, will serve as a centralized hub for sports promotion, training, and athlete development.

It will provide federations with resources for training camps, workshops, and seminars to elevate Nigerian athletes’ global competitiveness. Engr. Gumel emphasized that the project will invigorate national sports initiatives, nurturing both local and professional talent.

The board meeting also addressed the ongoing National Federation elections, the OlympAfrica project in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, and preparations for upcoming competitions, including the African School Sports Games in Algeria (July 25–August 5, 2025) and the Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia (November 17–21, 2025).

The NOC is optimistic that this landmark project will significantly enhance Nigeria’s sports ecosystem and contribute to the nation’s success on the global stage.
