The Executive Director, Marine and Operations of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Engr. Olalekan Badmus, has commended journalists in Osun State for their commitment to professionalism and their role in sustaining democratic values.

Badmus, who facilitated the repainting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel in Osogbo as part of efforts to strengthen the media’s operational capacity, noted that journalists in the state have continued to demonstrate responsibility and professionalism in the discharge of their duties despite facing various challenges.

According to him, the media remains a critical pillar of democracy whose role in promoting accountability, transparency and informed public discourse cannot be overstated.

Badmus recalled the period of the local government crisis in the state, noting that journalists maintained professionalism by reporting all sides of the issue without bias until the Supreme Court affirmed members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the authentic executives.

He also assured media practitioners that the governorship candidate of the APC in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), would prioritise the welfare of journalists if elected governor in the 2026 election.

“Investing in journalism infrastructure is an investment in democracy and national development. As we approach the 2026 Osun governorship election, journalists should continue to uphold the ethics of their profession, avoid sensationalism and remain steadfast in reporting facts in the interest of the public,” Badmus said.

In his response, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Shina Abubakar, appreciated the gesture and appealed for further support, including solar inverters, laptops and internet facilities, while also seeking partnership from well-meaning Nigerians towards building the chapel’s proposed secretariat in Osogbo.
