…Rivers United, Abia Warriors seal continental spots

On a day Remo Stars were officially handed the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) trophy, fellow South West side, Sunshine Stars of Akure, were confirmed relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Sunday’s Matchday 37 fixtures were packed with drama, as several results significantly altered the standings.
At the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, the champions came from a goal down to beat Ikorodu City 4-1 in a South West derby—a result that ended Ikorodu City’s hopes of securing a continental spot.

Abia Warriors capitalized on Ikorodu City’s slip, sealing a continental ticket with a 2-1 win over El-Kanemi Warriors.
The victory keeps Abia Warriors in contention for a second-place finish after Rivers United lost 1-3 to Bendel Insurance.
With Abia Warriors set to play away to Ikorodu City and Rivers United hosting Nasarawa United on Matchday 38, either team could still claim the CAF Champions League slot, with the other settling for the Confederation Cup.
Sunshine Stars’ relegation was confirmed after a 1-2 defeat to Niger Tornadoes, handing the Minna-based side a lifeline. Meanwhile, Nasarawa United secured their topflight status with a thrilling 3-2 win over Enyimba in Gombe.
Elsewhere, Heartland of Owerri saw their survival hopes dwindle following a 0-1 loss to Bendel Insurance in Benin. Kano Pillars thrashed Shooting Stars 3-1, with Ahmed Musa scoring twice. Akwa United defeated Bayelsa United 2-0, Rangers routed Katsina United 4-0, while Plateau United edged already-relegated Lobi Stars 2-1.
