NUJ seeks lasting solutions to poor security, economic conditions in Ondo

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ondo State Council, has raised concerns over the deplorable state of security and living standards in the state, while urging the government to protect residents and stabilise the economy.

Their concerns were contained in a communiqué issued during the union’s congress in Akure.

In the communique, the congress raised an alarm over the surge in kidnapping incidents, particularly along the Akure North and Uso–Owo axis of the state, urging authorities to strengthen security operations.

While speaking on the persistent hike in transport fares, despite stable fuel prices, the congress criticized major stakeholders and called on the National Union of Road Transport Workers, and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria to regulate operators.

On inter-state tensions, the NUJ appealed to the Federal Government and the National Boundary Commission to urgently resolve the Eba Island dispute between Ondo and Ogun States, stressing that peace is much needed, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The guild went further to commend Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for taking on some remarkable initiatives including the conversion of Owena Press Limited to a government corporation and the recruitment of new staff into the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation.

The NUJ also seized the opportunity to push for the regularization of contract workers’ appointments, especially those who were excluded from the last employment exercise.
