Nwabali returns to action ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Nigeria’s preparations for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa have received a major boost following the return of first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, to competitive action.
Nwabali had been a major injury concern for the Super Eagles after he was stretchered off during a league game for his South African club, Chippa United, against Richards Bay last week. His fitness had raised anxiety among Nigerian fans, given his importance to the national team.
However, the goalkeeper returned to action on Sunday in Chippa United’s clash with Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier League. He not only completed the match but also saved a penalty that could have extended Pirates’ two-goal lead, easing fears over his availability for Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Rwanda’s delegation for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Nigeria is scheduled to arrive in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon. A one-man advance party is expected in Lagos on Monday, ahead of the main contingent.
The full delegation will travel aboard a RwandAir flight, arriving in Lagos at 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday before proceeding to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, later that afternoon.
The encounter remains critical for both sides as they chase qualification. Group leaders South Africa currently sit atop with 13 points, pending FIFA’s ruling on their use of an ineligible player in a March victory over Lesotho.
Rwanda are second with eight points, level with Benin Republic, while Nigeria are fourth with seven points. Lesotho have six points, and Zimbabwe sit bottom with four.
