OAU appoints ex-Osun Speaker Adejare Bello as pro-chancellor
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced the appointment of former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adejare Bello, as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the university’s Governing Council.
The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju. According to the statement, Bello brings extensive experience in public service, having served in legislative and diplomatic capacities over the years.
The university noted that Bello previously served as Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, where he demonstrated leadership and commitment to democratic governance.
He also represented Nigeria as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico in June 2021, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala and Panama, contributing to the country’s diplomatic relations and international engagements.
An alumnus of OAU, Bello obtained a degree in Law from the institution, a background the university said positions him to understand the institution’s history and future aspirations.
The statement added that the new pro-chancellor, who hails from Ede in Osun State, is widely respected for his humility and strong interpersonal relations.
The university expressed confidence in his ability to provide effective leadership and work with members of the council, management, staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders to advance the institution’s goals.
Bello succeeds the late chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, who died in December 2025 at the age of 64.
