OAU dismisses viral resumption notice as fake

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University has dismissed a purported letter circulating online regarding the resumption date from the institution’s ongoing three-week mid-semester break.
In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution stated categorically and unequivocally that the said letter did not emanate from the Office of the Registrar or any authorised organ of the university.
The management also stated that the signature appended to the document was fake, forged and criminally fabricated, advising students, parents, guardians, alumni, staff and other stakeholders to disregard the letter completely, as it carries no authority, legitimacy or approval from the university.
According to Olarewaju, the fake document was the handiwork of “mischief makers and agents of confusion” aimed at misleading members of the university community, creating tension and tarnishing the institution’s image. The management reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, peace, orderliness and the welfare of members of the university community.
He added that official information concerning the institution would always be communicated through recognised and verified channels, urging stakeholders to remain calm and vigilant against the spread of misinformation.
It would be recalled that the university management directed students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break following protests over transportation.
The students had protested against the newly introduced transportation system, insisting that the available buses were grossly inadequate for over 40,000 students, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff and other users of the campus facilities.
The protest later escalated into the blockage of major access roads within the institution.
