Oba Ladoja’s reign will transform Ibadanland – Prof. Falola

By Adejayan Gbenga –

Renowned historian, Prof. Toyin Falola, has expressed confidence that the reign of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, will usher in modernisation and development in Ibadanland.

Falola stated this on Wednesday while delivering the maiden Olubadan Coronation Lecture, themed “Ibadan History: Issues in Tradition and Modernity.” The lecture was part of the activities leading up to Ladoja’s installation as the 44th Olubadan on Friday.

He described Ladoja as a seasoned politician, statesman, and successful businessman whose influence would drive economic growth and progress—not only in Ibadan but across Oyo State.

“Though he is not the governor, the expectations of the people are high because he has the power to influence meaningful change,” Falola said.

The historian urged residents to embrace modernisation through improved waste management and environmental hygiene, while also preserving and promoting Ibadan’s cultural heritage.

Chairman of the Coronation Lecture Committee, Prof. Amidu Sani, said the lecture was designed to highlight Ibadan’s intellectual depth and correct misconceptions about its people.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Coronation Committee, Chief Bayo Oyero, noted that the lecture was not merely an academic exercise but a forum for reflection and guidance for the new monarch.
