The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has called on Muslims to observe Ramadan with deep devotion, and unity describing these as essential pillars of Islam that foster piety, spiritual rejuvenation, and self-discipline.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Bode Durojaiye, on Saturday, Oba Owoade emphasized that the holy month marks the revelation of the Qur’an and provides an opportunity to maximise spiritual rewards through prayer, fasting, and charity.

The monarch noted that fasting helps Muslims develop self-control and mindfulness, as it reminds them of their dependence on God. “Through abstaining from basic pleasures, believers cleanse themselves spiritually and draw closer to Allah,” he said while urging muslim faithful to dedicate themselves to worship, reflection, and prayer.

Oba Owoade also encouraged Muslims to engage in additional religious practices, including the nightly Taraweeh prayers after the Isha prayer, which involves reciting portions of the Qur’an to strengthen faith and spiritual connection.

Charity, the Alaafin stressed, is a key aspect of Ramadan. He urged Muslims to give generously to those in need as a means of purifying wealth and earning Allah’s blessings, describing acts of giving as central to the spiritual objectives of the holy month.

On national unity, the Alafin emphasised that trust, understanding, and mutual respect among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic, religious, and communal groups are essential. He stated that tolerance, reconciliation, and addressing longstanding grievances are vital for deepening democracy and promoting sustainable development in the country.

Following the Jumaat prayers, the Alaafin paid an unscheduled visit to the Akesan Market, where traders warmly received him. He later returned to the palace where he danced to the traditional Gbedu drum, a symbol of royalty among the Yoruba people, highlighting the cultural significance of indigenous music and heritage.
