Odili accuses Wike of power grab, praises Fubara’s leadership

Former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili has alleged that Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), attempted to turn Rivers State into his “private estate.”
According to Odili, current Governor Siminalayi Fubara thwarted these efforts, demonstrating resilience and effective leadership.
Odili made the remarks during an event organized by the Odili family in Port Harcourt on Friday to honour Governor Fubara. A statement released on Saturday by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, detailed Odili’s comments.
Commending Fubara for his leadership, Odili, who served as governor from 1999 to 2007, noted that the incumbent has shown “fortitude and sterling leadership qualities” since assuming office.

The comments come amidst escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and Wike, his predecessor and former political ally. Analysts observe that this rift highlights a deeper power struggle within the state’s political landscape.
Initially a member of Wike’s political camp, Fubara has increasingly asserted his independence, fueling speculation about a fallout between the two leaders.
“Odili explained that over the past 12 months, starting from October 25, 2023, a fierce but unnecessary existential fight was waged against Governor Fubara over control of Rivers State,” the statement read.
“He (Odili) stated that with commendable fortitude, Governor Fubara confronted the challenge, prevented one man’s attempt to capture the state as a private estate, liberated the people of Rivers, steadied governance, and restored the happiness of civil servants and residents as it was during his tenure in office.”
During his address at the event, Governor Fubara expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the people of Rivers State, emphasizing their role in his leadership amidst the ongoing political turmoil.
“It’s not about me being strong; my strength comes from all of you here,” Fubara said. “You encourage me, do the work for me, and make the calls for me. So, why wouldn’t I stand up for you?”
The governor also highlighted the role of faith in navigating the crisis. “We believe strongly that the ultimate game changer, liberator, and fighter is God Almighty. With Him on our side, victory is assured.”
Fubara assured attendees of his commitment to governing with integrity. “We will continue to run a government that uplifts the state’s image. We will not be tyrants. We recognize that leadership is temporary, and one day, we will hand over to someone else.”
The event served as a platform to reaffirm Governor Fubara’s dedication to the people and to address the challenges facing the state’s political and governance structure.
