Ogun govt debunks reports on selection of New Awujale of Ijebuland

The Ogun State Government has dismissed reports circulating in parts of the media and on social media claiming that a candidate has been selected to fill the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland.

In a press release signed on Monday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Harmzat Ganiyu, the government described the reports as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard them.

According to the statement, the process for selecting a new Awujale is strictly guided by customary law, established chieftaincy declarations and the relevant laws of Ogun State. The government reaffirmed its commitment to due process, fairness, neutrality and respect for the traditions of Ijebuland.

The government warned that the deliberate spread of false information or inciting publications capable of causing tension, disaffection or a breach of peace in Ijebuland and across the state would not be tolerated.

It added that any individual or group found fabricating, promoting or circulating such claims would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Members of the public were advised to avoid actions that could undermine peace, order and the integrity of traditional institutions, while the media and opinion leaders were urged to verify information through official channels.

The statement further assured the people of Ijebuland and Ogun State of the government’s commitment to transparency, justice and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The government also warned that it would invoke Section 23(2) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, against anyone parading themselves as Awujale-elect before the completion of the selection process.
