Ojodu LG chairman rallies support for Lagos vaccination programme

…to set up committee on immunisation campaign

By Adeola Ogunrinde –

The Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Olusegun Odumbaku, has expressed strong support for the Public Health Centre (PHC) Taskforce set up by the Lagos State Government to embark on a statewide vaccination campaign against communicable diseases. He also announced plans to establish a committee within the council to work closely with the taskforce to ensure the success of the immunisation exercise in Ojodu.

Odumbaku’s commitment followed the outcome of the inaugural meeting of the taskforce held on Tuesday with the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and the 57 council chairmen at the deputy governor’s office. At the meeting, emphasis was placed on the urgent need to combat communicable diseases at the grassroots level through comprehensive child immunisation.

Dr. Hamzat highlighted the pivotal role of council chairmen in helping the state achieve its goal of preventing diseases such as polio, stressing the importance of ensuring that public health centres within their areas are effective and well-resourced.

The deputy governor further urged the council chairmen to prioritise health in their budgets and strengthen the capacity of health centres in their communities, noting that local governments are the closest to the grassroots and best positioned to drive immunisation coverage.

Speaking after the meeting, Odumbaku assured that the Ojodu LCDA under his administration is ready to collaborate with the PHC Taskforce to ensure every child within the council receives necessary vaccinations. He added that his administration will set up a committee to coordinate operations with the taskforce and intensify awareness campaigns among parents, school owners, and religious leaders.

“My administration in Ojodu LCDA fully supports the vaccination campaign by the state. We take the health of our children seriously because they represent our future. Since assuming office, we have renovated and rebuilt four public health centres in Apata, Akiode, Powerline, and Gbadamosi areas. The Oluwole Health Centre has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, and others will soon be upgraded,” Odumbaku said.

He added that qualified medical personnel have been employed to strengthen healthcare delivery within the LCDA, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the vaccination initiative.

Before Odumbaku assumed office, many of the council’s health centres were in deplorable condition. However, his administration has since transformed them, employing over 50 health workers and facilitating more than 600 minor surgeries in the Oluwole, Powerline, and Akiode centres.
