Okupe backs Tinubu’s speech on economic challenges

Former Director-General of the Labour Party presidential campaign council, Doyin Okupe has voiced his approval of President Bola Tinubu’s recent address on the #EndBadGovernance protest, describing it as a commendable effort.

On August 4, President Tinubu acknowledged the grievances of protesters decrying the nation’s economic hardships, assuring them that their voices had been heard “loud and clear.”

In his speech, the president detailed several measures his administration has undertaken to alleviate the nation’s suffering.

Okupe, who previously served as the director-general of the Labour Party presidential campaign council, took to social media platform X to express his support. He highlighted that for the first time, the president candidly addressed the severe economic challenges inherited by his administration.

“President Bola Tinubu’s speech has not disappointed Nigerians,” Okupe stated. “He emphasized the strenuous efforts made by his government to reduce the crippling and stagnating debt servicing ratio from 97 percent of earned revenue to 68 percent.”

Okupe pointed out that the removal of the fuel subsidy was essential for the government to function and meet its obligations without resorting to massive borrowing to fund national budgets.

He also praised the increase in the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000, significant investments in infrastructure and agriculture, and initiatives to reduce the rising cost of living. These efforts include the temporary importation of food and the removal of tariffs and import duties on essential goods for the next six months.

“I personally believe that this administration’s performance compares very well, if not better, than those of many previous administrations,” Okupe added. He urged youths and citizens to be patient and embrace the opportunity for dialogue offered by the president.

Okupe concluded that Tinubu’s speech dispelled misinformation about his ability to manage the economic turbulence and rekindled hope for a brighter, more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
