Olubadan coronation programmes threaten Muslim Friday prayers – MURIC

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed concern that the programmes announced by the Olubadan coronation committee could infringe on Muslims’ right to observe Friday prayers.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Isiaq Akintola, MURIC criticized the scheduling of the coronation events for the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, slated for Friday, September 26, 2025.

Professor Akintola noted that the Friday events coincide with the Jumu’ah prayer, describing the arrangement as “repulsive, provocative, insensitive, and therefore unacceptable,” arguing that it effectively prevents Muslims from attending congregational prayers.

While acknowledging that the programmes for the first four days of the coronation are appropriate, MURIC called on the planning committee to reconsider the Friday schedule.

“Guests from far and near, including Muslim leaders, are expected at this historic occasion. They should not leave with the impression that Friday prayer is being disregarded by the Oyo State government,” the statement added.
