Oluremi Tinubu calls for unity, empowerment of people of African descent

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for greater unity, cultural preservation and investment in the education and empowerment of people of African descent.

She made the call on Monday in a message commemorating the 2026 International Day for People of African Descent, themed “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development.”

Tinubu said the occasion provided an opportunity to celebrate the heritage and contributions of people of African descent to humanity while renewing efforts to protect human rights and promote equal opportunities.

She urged Africans to preserve their cultural heritage and strengthen ties between the continent and the African diaspora.

“As Africans, we must continue to preserve our rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity across the continent and the diaspora, and invest in the education, empowerment, and well-being of our people,” she said.

The First Lady also stressed the need for collective action to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to realise their full potential.

She said the commemoration should serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting human rights and creating opportunities for people of African descent to contribute meaningfully to development.

Tinubu congratulated people of African descent around the world on the occasion and called for renewed commitment to recognition, justice and development.
