Ondo: Civil society coalition commends INEC, security agencies, residents for peaceful gubernatorial election
The Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative, a coalition of civil society organizations, has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigerian Police Force, security agencies, political parties, and the people of Ondo State for the peaceful and credible conduct of the gubernatorial election held on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Nelson Ekujumi, Comrade Gbenga Soloki, Comrade Popoola Ajayi, Comrade Rasak Oladosu, and Comrade Razak Olokoba, the coalition described the election as free, fair, and reflective of the will of the people.
The coalition commended INEC for overcoming logistical challenges that have plagued past elections. According to the group, electoral officers and materials arrived at over 99% of polling stations between 8:10 and 8:30 a.m., ensuring that accreditation and voting commenced promptly.
INEC was further praised for the effective deployment of sensitive and non-sensitive materials and the optimal functionality of BVAS machines at polling units statewide.
“The successful conduct of this election demonstrates an improvement in Nigeria’s electoral process. We congratulate INEC for setting a high standard in organizing a credible election,” the coalition stated.
The coalition also acknowledged the professionalism of the security agencies, noting their impartial and diligent provision of adequate security for election materials, personnel, and voters. Their efforts were described as a “world-class standard” that significantly contributed to the peaceful atmosphere on election day.
The media and election observers, both local and international, received accolades for their unbiased coverage and observation, which the coalition said played a critical role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Political parties and their candidates were encouraged to demonstrate true sportsmanship by supporting the declared winner, Governor-Elect Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group urged those dissatisfied with the election process or outcome to seek redress through legal means, in line with democratic principles.
In their congratulatory message to the Governor-Elect, the coalition described his victory as a triumph for the people of Ondo State and called on him to prioritize improving their lives during his tenure.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s victory is a mandate from the people of Ondo State. We urge him to dedicate his leadership to their welfare and development,” the statement concluded.
The coalition reiterated its commitment to democracy and expressed hope for continued progress in Nigeria’s electoral system.
