Ondo deploys experts to investigate mysterious odour

The Ondo State Government has engaged environmental and analytical chemistry experts to investigate the offensive odour reported in parts of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Tob Loko, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the move followed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s directive to identify the source of the odour and protect residents.

Loko said the team comprises university professors specialising in environmental, analytical and inorganic chemistry and is led by Professor Victoria Akpambang, chairperson of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, Ondo State chapter.

He identified other members of the team as Professors Ademola Aiyesanmi, Afamefuna Okoronkwo, Wasiu Tomori and Isiaka Amoo.

According to the commissioner, the engagement is intended to bring scientific expertise and evidence-based analysis to the investigation of the environmental concern.

Loko said the move underscores the state government’s commitment to applying scientific expertise to address the issue and protect the health, safety and well-being of residents.

Meanwhile, the commissioner urged residents to cooperate with the ministry by reporting suspicious activities, illegal discharges and other information that could assist the investigation.

He assured residents that the government would take all necessary steps to address the situation, stressing that the health, safety and well-being of the people remained its priority.
