Ondo suspends top officials over teachers’ recruitment scam

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Three officials of the Ondo State Government have been suspended for their alleged involvement in a job scam connected to the recent teachers’ recruitment exercise.

The suspended officers—two directors and a deputy director—were relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation ordered by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The controversy began after several individuals staged a protest last week, claiming they were excluded from the ongoing biometric verification of newly recruited teachers. It was later discovered that their appointment letters were forged.

In response, the state government clarified that the protesters were not among the over 2,000 teachers legitimately recruited through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), all of whom have since resumed duties.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, revealed that three SUBEB insiders had allegedly conspired with outsiders to issue fake appointment and posting letters in exchange for money.

He stated, “Those who protested were not employed teachers but applicants defrauded by scammers who issued fake employment and posting letters after collecting money from them.”

The scam came to light during the biometric verification process, where the affected individuals were identified and informed that their documents were not authentic.

Disciplinary measures have now been taken against the implicated officials, as the government continues investigations to identify all parties involved in the fraudulent scheme.
