Operation show your identity in Alausa as protest begins in Lagos

By Adeola Ogunrinde

The usual hustle and bustle of Lagos were disrupted this morning as many commercial motorists, motorcycle riders, and Keke Maruwa operators did not show up for business.

At the Alausa Secretariat government house, it was “operation show your identity card” as the police barricaded the road at the traffic light near JJT Park. Only those who could identify themselves, both motorists and pedestrians, were allowed through.

No BRT buses were seen at the bus terminals, and only a few commuters were at various bus stops. Similarly, local food vendors, who are typically out early in the morning for their trading activities, were absent.

As early as six o’clock this morning, security personnel were on standby at strategic junctions from Ikorodu to Ketu. Traffic was unusually light, taking only twenty-three minutes to get to Ketu from Ikorodu on a weekday—a journey that usually takes over an hour.

Concerned residents appealed to the protesters to be orderly if they must come out and to avoid violence that could disrupt business activities. They noted that the masses, whom the protesters claim to represent, are the worst hit by these actions, as many daily wage earners may not be able to work.
