Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, the children of veteran Nigerian singer and actress Onyeka Onwenu, have urged family members and the public to reflect on their mother’s life and impact.

The sons of the ‘Iyogogo’ singer made this known while announcing their mother’s passing and sharing details about her final moments.

“It is with heavy hearts that my brother and I announce the passing of our mother, the much-loved Onyeka Onwenu,” her children wrote in a signed statement on Wednesday, July 31.

The statement continued, “She passed away last night, Tuesday, July 30, 2024, in Lagos, Nigeria. She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life… sadly she passed.”

“Mr. Peter Obi, Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, as well as Messrs. Ajayi and Okpara, all of whom were with her during her last moments. Governor Alex Otti joined to offer condolences soon after her passing. We are also appreciative of Reddington Hospital and all their staff for their efforts.

“As we take the time to make the necessary arrangements, we would like everyone to remember her life, the contributions she made, and the impact she had on so many lives, including ours.”

Onyeka Onwenu completed a performance at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli when she was suddenly rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos.

The renowned singer was born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, and had been in the entertainment scene for over four decades.
