Oro monarch crowned by Alaafin of Oyo on Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve was marked by celebration in Oro town, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I, crowned the Oloro of Oro, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II.
The coronation took place during the Oro Day festivities and the first coronation anniversary of the monarch, held in Oro town. The event attracted large crowds and featured cultural displays and celebrations across the community.
A statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, said the ceremony reflected the historical ties between Oyo and Oro.
Oba Olufayo, who was installed and received his staff of office on October 27, 2024, ascended the throne at the age of 40. He is described as a cultural ambassador and business consultant. His emergence marks the return of his lineage to the Oro throne after more than 200 years.

The Oro Kingdom, located in Kwara State, comprises 11 towns and is known for commerce and community development. Oro is also a historic Yoruba settlement with long-standing cultural and traditional institutions.
Speaking before the coronation, the Alaafin said Oro town was founded by his forefathers centuries ago and expressed delight at crowning the monarch. He described the Oloro as a passionate and distinguished ruler.
The Alaafin commended Oba Olufayo for promoting peace, unity and development in the kingdom, noting that his leadership had contributed to socio-economic growth and harmony in Oro and its surrounding communities. He also called for sustained cordial relations between Oyo and Oro.
In his remarks after the coronation, the Oloro described the event as historic, tracing the roots of the Oro people to Oyo and reaffirming his commitment to peaceful and inclusive leadership.
