Osimhen emerges Man of the Match in Eagles’ victory over Algeria

By Tosin Omojola –
Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen was named the best performer of the night as Nigeria beat Algeria 2–0 in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final decided in Marrakesh on Saturday.
Osimhen put up an impressive performance, scoring the first goal of the game to inspire the Super Eagles to victory over the North Africans.
The Galatasaray striker opened the scoring just two minutes after the restart, nodding home in the 48th minute, before setting up Akor Adams for the second goal five minutes later to seal the Eagles’ passage into the semi-finals.
Osimhen’s influence and all-round display earned him the Man of the Match award, as confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The goal was his fourth of the tournament, and he trails Morocco’s Diaz, who currently tops the goal scorers’ chart with five goals.
Interestingly, both players will face each other as Nigeria take on Morocco in the semi-final fixture.
Meanwhile, the former Golden Eaglets striker is just two goals away from equalling the all-time highest goal-scoring record held by the late Rashidi Yekini.
The goal against Algeria brings Osimhen’s tally to 35, just two short of Yekini, who scored 37 goals for the country.
