Osun activists honour late Comrade Aremu with candlelight procession, night of tributes

The Osun Civil Society Coalition (OCSC) held an emotional night of tributes in honour of the late Comrade Fidelista Abiodun Aremu, fondly called Aremson, celebrating his lifelong dedication to social justice, labour rights, and revolutionary movements.

The solemn event, which featured a candlelight procession, began at the OCSC State Secretariat in Osogbo and moved through Olaiya, MDS, and Old Garage before ending at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, where activists, comrades, and associates paid their last respects.

Speaking at the event, OCSC Chairman, Comrade (Dr.) Waheed Lawal, described Aremu as a rare patriot whose footprints remain indelible in Osun State and Nigeria’s development at large.

He said, “Comrade Aremu was a veteran of the democratic struggle, the labour movement, and the revolutionary movement. His presence was felt everywhere, and the only way to immortalize him is to continue the struggle he lived and died for. He was a man of many parts who contributed immensely to the development of Osun State and Nigeria.”

In his remarks, the Osun State Coordinator of the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School-Movement (ACIS-M), Comrade Akin Gofment, hailed Aremu as a consistent voice against misgovernance, corruption, and the underfunding of education.

According to Gofment, Aremu remained committed to campaigns against US economic blockades on the island of Cuba and the Sahrawi Republic’s subjugation under Moroccan domination.

He described the late comrade as a detribalized Nigerian, likening him to one of his heroes, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who often used economic reasoning to challenge tribal and religious divisions.

Gofment added that Aremson co-founded, nurtured, mentored, and worked alongside many organisations and individuals across labour, student, youth, artisan, peasant, and women’s movements, often using his personal resources to advance their causes.
