Osun lawmaker tasks students on research into voter apathy

A member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewumi Adeyemi, has urged Nigerian researchers to investigate the causes of voter apathy and leadership failure in the country.
Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Research Fair of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Adeyemi, who represents Obokun State Constituency, emphasised that research can play a crucial role in understanding why many Nigerians are reluctant to participate in elections.
The lawmaker, who was the guest speaker at the event, also challenged students to explore why leadership remains a persistent problem in Nigeria.
“Leadership remains one of Nigeria’s biggest challenges. It is important for researchers to interrogate why our leaders seem to be the problem,” he said.
Adeyemi noted that research should go beyond academics to focus on practical areas such as business, investments, and decisions that impact daily life.
He further encouraged students, particularly Christians, to actively participate in politics if they truly desire to bring about change.
The lawmaker added that religious beliefs should not discourage political involvement, citing himself as a born-again Christian who also holds a leadership role in his church’s evangelism unit.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of awards for outstanding research and an exhibition showcasing various research projects by the university.
