Osun youths issue 7-day ultimatum over housing exploitation

The Osun State chapter of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to address growing exploitation in the housing sector or face a mass peaceful protest.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel in Osogbo, YAN Speaker, Rt. Hon. Fatomi Dare Hammed, described the move as a call for justice, not rebellion.

He condemned the rising extortion and unethical practices by unregulated landlords and house agents, urging immediate government intervention. “What we are witnessing is not just an inconvenience—it’s a societal emergency,” he said.

Hammed expressed frustration over the government’s silence despite multiple appeals, stating that no meaningful action, acknowledgment, or engagement has occurred. He stressed that the youth must not be ignored.

“We’re not attacking the government. We commend the administration’s efforts in infrastructure and youth inclusion,” he said. “But this inaction is disheartening.”

YAN listed five demands: implementation of the Agency Regulatory Bill, creation of a regulatory body for landlords and agents, a redress platform for victims, a Housing Task Force to ensure compliance, and a statewide awareness campaign on tenants’ rights.

Hammed urged youths across Osun to stay alert and united, warning that if nothing is done within the ultimatum period, the protest date will be announced.
