Oyo Assembly calls for Bio-Medical Engineering departments in general hospitals

By Adejayan Gbenga –

The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to intensify efforts to establish Bio-Medical Engineering departments and to better equip General Hospitals across the state.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Hon. Gbenga Oyekola, representing Atiba State Constituency, during plenary on Wednesday. He noted that many General Hospitals in Oyo lack essential equipment and facilities needed to adequately care for patients requiring specialized services.

Oyekola emphasized that residents in underserved local government areas are often forced to travel long distances to access quality medical care.

He added that strengthening secondary healthcare facilities would help reduce infant and maternal mortality rates while serving as a critical link between primary and tertiary health services.

Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Speaker Hon. Abiodun Fadeyi urged the state government to prioritize the establishment and proper equipping of General Hospitals in underserved areas.

The House also directed its Standing Committee on Health to investigate the current state of equipment in General Hospitals across Oyo State and to present a detailed report during a future plenary session.
