Oyo Assembly passes 32 bills, 143 resolutions in two years — Speaker
By Adejayan Gbenga –
The Oyo State House of Assembly has passed 32 bills, adopted 143 resolutions, and reviewed 63 committee reports within the last two years. This was disclosed by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, during a town hall meeting in Ibadan, organised by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) in collaboration with the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development (OYMASED).
Ogundoyin said the 10th Assembly had made significant strides in legislative reforms, democratic consolidation, and passing people-focused laws. He added that while several of the bills had already received assent from Governor Seyi Makinde, others were still awaiting approval.
He highlighted key initiatives of the Assembly, including the adoption of legislative agendas for both the 9th and 10th Assemblies, plans to digitalise the House Chamber, and the upgrade of the Assembly’s printing press. He also announced proposals for simultaneous constituency engagement across the state.
According to the Speaker, the legislature had approached its duties with diligence and a strong commitment to public service. He noted that lawmakers had prioritised motions, laws, and oversight activities aimed at improving governance and deepening democracy, while maintaining synergy with the Executive and Judiciary.
Ogundoyin also pointed out several challenges confronting the Assembly. These, he said, include inadequate funding, poor public awareness of legislative roles, limited access to training for members and staff, lack of functional committee rooms, and insufficient transport logistics for committee assignments.
“Progress is never without challenges,” the Speaker said. “Despite capacity gaps, financial constraints, and structural issues, we remain committed to transparency, participatory democracy, and legislative excellence.”
Speaking in his capacity as Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Ogundoyin described the town hall as a platform to evaluate service delivery and develop sustainable solutions. He urged civil society organisations, youth, and traditional institutions to engage more actively with the legislative process.
KAS Resident Representative in Nigeria, Marija Peran, and Director General of OYMASED, Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, commended the Assembly’s performance. While Peran praised its dedication to good governance, Thomas emphasised the importance of continuous public engagement with the legislature.
