Oyo Assembly raises alarm over rising destitution, out-of-school children

By Adejayan Gbenga

The Oyo State House of Assembly has expressed concern over the increasing number of destitutes, beggars, and out-of-school children across the 33 Local Government Areas of the state.

The lawmakers warned that the growing presence of these groups on the streets of Oyo could lead to humanitarian challenges and negatively affect the state’s image.

While moving the motion on Tuesday, Babajide Adebayo, the lawmaker representing Ibadan North Constituency II, acknowledged past efforts by the state government but stressed the need for more comprehensive action.

He called on the government to accelerate the evacuation, rehabilitation, and possible relocation of destitute persons, while also creating opportunities for their reintegration into society.

The Assembly further recommended the introduction of skill acquisition programmes and educational initiatives to empower affected individuals and reduce their dependence on street life.

Following deliberations, the house urged the executive arm, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, to intensify efforts in removing destitute persons from public spaces and ensuring safer environments across the state.
