The Oyo State Government has suspended Chief Jacob Adefabi Sobaloju, the Sobaloju of Ofiki in Atisbo Local Government Area, over alleged breaches of Executive Order 001/2023 and unauthorised mining in state reserves.

According to a letter from the Director of Chieftaincy Matters, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Olajire A.M., Chief Sobaloju is accused of issuing consent letters to mining companies without proper authorisation, permitting operations in gazetted state forests, and encouraging trespassing on government-owned land.

The suspension, effective from Monday, 5 January 2026, was confirmed in a statement by Moses Alao, Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on Print Media.

The measure is described as precautionary, aimed at protecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The letter instructed the chief to cease all mining-related activities, refrain from issuing further consent letters, and make himself available for questioning by the investigating team.

Makinde’s office said the action was necessary to safeguard public assets and uphold environmental regulations, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to lawful management of natural resources.
