Oyo Government clarifies rumoured crude oil discovery

The Oyo State Government has denied reports circulating on social media that crude oil was discovered in a well at Yemetu, Ibadan, clarifying that the water was actually contaminated by diesel.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, a three-day investigation was launched on September 8, 2025, following a petition regarding suspected water pollution at a residence in Yemetu Igosun.

“Findings showed that a well, which had served residents for nearly 20 years without contamination, was suddenly polluted with diesel that completely covered the water surface. About 250 litres of the substance were later recovered by security operatives,” the ministry stated.

Officials also inspected a telephone mast located less than three metres from the well but found no evidence linking it to the contamination. Eyewitnesses reported that the pollution occurred within six hours, raising suspicions of foul play in the community, which has a history of unrest.

To mitigate the impact, the Oyo State Water Corporation provided 5,000 litres of potable water to affected households, while accredited contractors evacuated the contaminated water for treatment. The mast owners were also directed to provide a borehole for the community as part of their corporate social responsibility.

The government urged residents to refrain from spreading false or sensational information capable of causing panic, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives, public health, and the environment.
