The Oyo State government has reaffirmed its commitment to demolishing illegal structures around schools to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), made this known during an inspection of the Jemibewon area of Sabo in Ibadan.
She emphasized the government’s resolve to maintain law and order despite complaints arising from the demolition exercises.
The inspection followed a petition received by OYRLEA on February 17, 2025, drawing attention to shanties around St. Gabriel School in the Jemibewon area.
Aderemi stated, “Recall that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, ordered the removal of shanties around school areas and fences on October 24, 2023. The rule of law must be upheld.”
She further revealed that letters had been sent twice to the occupants and owners of the illegal structures, and meetings were held with the Seriki n Sabo to engage the residents. An ultimatum was also issued for them to vacate the area.
Aderemi added that, in response to an appeal, the government has delayed the demolition until Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
